I trust you've had a good week. I think it is fair to say that each year these few weeks are an emotional rollercoaster for us, the Jewish people. There are not too many weeks during the calendar year where one can experience such a stark contrast or shift of emotion as the past two weeks. From the deeply sad, moving, and difficult days of Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazikaron and then the immediate gear change to the joyous and celebratory day of Yom Ha'atzmaut. This period gives us a lot to think about and to digest, but there's one story about coping through these times, that always come to mind this time of the year. It is of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, talking to a young child whose father had been killed in the line of duty while serving in the IDF. The child asked the Prime Minister if it was difficult for Mr. Netanyahu when he lost his brother during the Entebbe Raid. The Prime Minister said something very moving and profound. He explained that at first the loss paralysed him. But he came to realize that life is like a river. We continue to flow forward and we find new places, experiences and opportunities. While we never forget the loss and our loved one we are able to keep moving just like the river keeps flowing. These words had a powerful impact on the young child. As we reflect on these days, experiences and moments, may they first and foremost help us strengthen our resolve and commitment to our identity as Am Yisrael and to Eretz Yisrael, but also to take to heart that when things are looking bleak, when where we are experiencing difficulties in life, to remember that there are beautiful and joyful times on the horizon.
May the Almighty bless us all with peace, joy and revealed good.
Am Yisrael Chai! Shabbat Shalom! |

This week's PARSHA is Tazria & Metzora (Leviticus 12:1-15:33) The Parshahs of Tazria and Metzora continue the discussion of the laws of tumah v’taharah, ritual impurity and purity. A woman giving birth undergoes a process of purification, which includes immersing in a mikvah (a naturally gathered pool of water) and bringing offerings to the Holy Temple. All male infants are to be circumcised on the eighth day of life. Also discussed is Tzaraat (often mistranslated as “leprosy”), a supra-natural plague and the rituals that someone who was afflicted with tzara’at must undergo. It then describes how tzara’at can appear on clothing and buildings and how they are purified from it. Click here to explore the Parsha.

A man is driving down a country road when he spots a farmer standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that the farmer is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing. The man gets out of the car, walks all the way out to the farmer and asks him, "Ah excuse me mister, but what are you doing?" The farmer replies, "I'm trying to win a Nobel Prize." "How?" asks the man, puzzled. "Well I heard they give the Nobel Prize to people who are out standing in their field." |
