Looking back to look forward - Rosh Hashanah is approaching!
The last two years have been taxing on everyone including parents in ways that none of us could have imagined. Home schooling, hybrid schooling, distanced schooling—none of the options were easy.
Toddlers running naked through zoom meetings, teenagers on video games for 24 hours per day, kids bored and lonely—I don’t need to enumerate the many things because we all lived it. And when I think back it felt like we were entering a new phase. Things were changing, opportunities were opening up. But now, at the time of the new year in the Jewish calendar, NEW is feeling pretty elusive.
One of the things I have always loved about the High Holidays is that it gives us an opportunity to reflect backward and set intentions for moving forward. And this year, this ritual is going to be more important than ever. (written by a Nina Meehan a mother of 3)

Rabbi Effy and Rebbetzin Shayna Block join Elwood Shule
Dear Members and friends of Elwood Shule, It is with great excitement to inform you that we will be welcoming the Rabbinic team of Rabbi Effy and Rebbetzin Shayna Mushka Block to our Elwood Shule family just in time for Rosh Hashana. The very enthusiastic duo have been living in Melbourne for the past three years, growing their following through outreach programs. Rabbi Block is Melbourne born while Rebbetzin Block is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They have 2 young children, Yitchok Leib and Chaya Leah, and together are committed to cultivating a strong Jewish presence in the Elwood and surrounding area.
Their passion has motivated them to create a following with the wider community through Torah classes, Shabbat meals and Holiday programs, as well as Women’s’ circles and a Hebrew program for children. 'We are so eager to be joining this beautiful Elwood community and are looking forward to a bright future together. All of you make Elwood Shule the home that it is and we are honoured to join the Elwood Shule family.' The Board is confident that Rabbi Effy and Rebbetzin Shayna Mushka will add a new sense of excitement through our community, and we hope that they will feel right at home here at Elwood Shule. Please join us for the upcoming High Holiday period at Elwood Shule and meet Rabbi and Rebbetzin Block. We look forward to many years of continuous growth at Elwood Shule.

Parashat Nitzavim Deuteronomy 29:9–30:20The Parshah of Nitzavim includes some of the most fundamental principles of the Jewish faith: The unity of Israel: “You stand today, all of you, before the L‑rd your G‑d: your heads, your tribes, your elders, your officers, and every Israelite man; your young ones, your wives, the stranger in your gate; from your wood-hewer to your water-drawer.” The future redemption: Moses warns of the exile and desolation of the Land that will result if Israel abandons G‑d’s laws, but then he prophesies that in the end, “You will return to the L‑rd your G‑d . . . If your outcasts shall be at the ends of the heavens, from there will the L‑rd your G‑d gather you . . . and bring you into the Land which your fathers have possessed.” The practicality of Torah: “For the mitzvah which I command you this day, it is not beyond you, nor is it remote from you. It is not in heaven . . . It is not across the sea . . . Rather, it is very close to you, in your mouth, in your heart, that you may do it.” Freedom of choice: “I have set before you life and goodness, and death and evil: in that I command you this day to love G‑d, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments . . . Life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse. And you shall choose life.” © Copyright, all rights reserved.
