Earlier this week I got to thoroughly enjoy a two day conference of Rabbis organised by the Rabbinical Council of Victoria. The conference and retreat was held at the beautiful Peppers Moonah Links Resort on the Mornington Peninsula and deliciously catered by Kosher Classique. We participated in workshops led by local and international (via zoom) speakers on a wide range of topics and held open and frank discussions among ourselves about our vocations, challenges, ideas and experiences. It was a very supportive, refreshing and inspiring environment. Most importantly much of the discussion and conversation over both days was focused on ourselves. We are constantly giving of our time and energy to others, riding the waves of life with our congregants and often shouldering their heavy pekelach with them. Yes, this is what we love doing and what we signed up to do, but it can and does take its toll. So looking after own health and wellbeing and that of our family, is paramount. I presented on this topic and shared my experiences and perspective with my colleagues, which was very well received.
Overall, there was a great sense of camaraderie and brotherhood and we look forward to that continuing and manifesting in more collaboration between Shules and communities.
And yes, we hit the driving range... It was quite the sight! All I can say is I'll happily stick to running :)
Rivki will be attending the Rebbetzins conference next week at the same location. If we're honest, it is the Rebbetzins who deserve the retreat and rejuvenation way more than the Rabbis... Shabbat Shalom and may it be a healthy and productive week ahead for us all! |

Yesterday, I had the honour of conducting a police memorial service in the city. Together we paused, reflected, paid tribute and remembered the four police officers who were tragically killed whilst carrying out their duty of keeping the community safe, one year ago. Days like these are a sad and stark reminder of the danger police men and women face in the course of their duties, day and night, on every single shift - and the courage with which they fulfill those duties of upholding all that is right and all that is good. We are forever grateful. May all members of Victoria Police remain safe as they keep us safe. May the families of the fallen be blessed with strength and comfort, knowing that their loved one will be remembered, with love and respect, today, tomorrow and always. |

This week's PARSHA is Acharei & Kedoshim (Leviticus 16:1-20:27) The sixth section of the Book of Leviticus opens as G‑d addresses Moses after (Acharei, in Hebrew) the death of his brother Aaron’s two oldest sons. G‑d gives Moses the laws regarding the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). This is followed by a list of various types of behavior that G‑d has forbidden to the Jewish people as a result of having made them into “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” at the Giving of the Torah. The seventh section of the Book of Leviticus begins with the statement: “You shall be holy (Kedoshim), for I, the L‑rd your G‑d, am holy.” This is followed by dozens of mitzvot, including: the prohibition against idolatry, the mitzvah of charity, the principle of equality before the law, Shabbat, sexual morality, honesty in business, honor and awe of one’s parents, and the sacredness of life. Also in Kedoshim is the dictum which the great sage Rabbi Akiva called a cardinal principle of Torah, and of which Hillel said, “This is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary” - “Love your fellow as yourself.” Click here to explore the Parsha. |
