Hope you've had a good week. Sadly, there was a horrific attack in Israel this week and Eli Kay was murdered on his way to the Kotel. We pray for the wounded and for Eli's family. May the Almighty grant them strength and may his memory forever be a blessing. I participated in the funeral virtually, it was heart wrenching. Thousands and thousands of people accompanying Eli on his final journey, singing soul stirring Niggunim through tears. We are one family. Am Yisrael - no matter what - Chai. If you haven't already seen the powerful interview Eli's father gave yesterday, I encourage you to watch it here, https://youtu.be/5o3jpRApiS8.
We go from darkness to light... Chanukah begins this Sunday night and it's main theme is to spread light and hope in the face of darkness and despair. As we light one candle, then two and three, through to eight, let's pause for a few moments and watch the little flames dance, allowing them to fill us with light, hope, courage, positivity and Jewish pride. Ronny and I set up the Menorah on Acland Street this week (pictured above). It will stand tall and proud for the duration of Chanukah and we look forward to lighting it's first candle on Sunday night. We hope you can join us! Details below. Wishing us all a Shabbat Shalom, Chanukah Sameach and week ahead filled with light!

I was honoured this week to participate in the Australian Federal Police’s Christchurch Mosaic project, together with Rabbi Ralph Genende. This magnificent two panel Silver Fern Mandala Glass mosaic (half shown here) is an expression of solidarity towards the Christchurch Muslim community after the tragic loss of life on 15 March 2019 and celebrates cultural diversity and a united community. The artwork will travel to NZ in the new year for handover by the AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw and will likely go to the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Community centre where sadly, so many lives were taken. I am always touched and appreciative when leaders from the Muslim community reach out following tragedies and difficult times in our local and global Jewish community. It is through communities coming together in respect and understanding and with a united voice against violence and extremism, that we create a more tolerant and peaceful world for ourselves and our children.

This week's PARSHA is Vayeshev (Genesis 37:1–40:23) Jacob settles in Hebron with his twelve sons. His favorite is seventeen-year-old Joseph, whose brothers are jealous of the preferential treatment he receives from his father, such as a precious many-colored coat that Jacob makes for Joseph. Joseph relates to his brothers two of his dreams which foretell that he is destined to rule over them, increasing their envy and hatred towards him. Simeon and Levi plot to kill him, but Reuben suggests that they throw him into a pit instead, intending to come back later and save him. While Joseph is in the pit, Judah has him sold to a band of passing Ishmaelites. The brothers dip Joseph’s special coat in the blood of a goat and show it to their father, leading him to believe that his most beloved son was devoured by a wild beast. Judah marries and has three children. The eldest, Er, dies young and childless, and his wife, Tamar, is given in levirate marriage to the second son, Onan. Onan sins by spilling his seed, and he too meets an early death. Judah is reluctant to have his third son marry her. Determined to have a child from Judah’s family, Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute and seduces Judah himself. Judah hears that his daughter-in-law has become pregnant and orders her executed for harlotry, but when Tamar produces some personal effects he left with her as a pledge for payment, he publicly admits that he is the father. Tamar gives birth to twin sons, Peretz (an ancestor of King David) and Zerach. Joseph is taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, the minister in charge of Pharaoh’s slaughterhouses. G‑d blesses everything he does, and soon he is made overseer of all his master’s property. Potiphar’s wife desires the handsome and charismatic lad; when Joseph rejects her advances, she tells her husband that the Hebrew slave tried to force himself on her, and has him thrown into prison. Joseph gains the trust and admiration of his jailers, who appoint him to a position of authority in the prison administration. In prison, Joseph meets Pharaoh’s chief butler and chief baker, both incarcerated for offending their royal master. Both have disturbing dreams, which Joseph interprets; in three days, he tells them, the butler will be released and the baker hanged. Joseph asks the butler to intercede on his behalf with Pharaoh. Joseph’s predictions are fulfilled, but the butler forgets all about Joseph and does nothing for him. Click here to explore the Parsha. © Copyright, all rights reserved, Chabad.org. |
