Hope you've had a good week and enjoying Chanukah with family and friends! It's been a wonderful week of Chanukah festivities and it kicked off with over 200 people gathering for the first night with joy and community spirit! For the fourth year, we brought Jewish tradition, culture and pride to Acland Street, a street which featured so significantly for our Jewish community of yesteryear. Enjoy photos on our website here and on our Facebook page here. We thank the City Of Port Phillip, Mayor Marcus Pearl and councillors Bond, Clark and Sirakoff for their support and participation. We thank the Kline family for their kindness and generosity, in loving memory of their dad, our dear friend George, ob’m. We thank Corey & Jason Fooks for the live music, and Victoria Police, CSG and Hatzolah for ensuring a safe and enjoyable evening for us all. Thank you to all our helpers and to everyone who came! Last night we lit 5 candles on the menorah, creating more lit than unlit candles. A dominance of light! Tonight we fill our homes and hearts with even more light, as we kindle 6 candles on the menorah, followed by lighting the Shabbat candles. Tomorrow in Shule we read from 3 Torahs! As Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah all coincide. My blessing for the week - As the menorah reaches it's full potential over the next few nights, filling each of it's empty spaces with light, so may our empty spaces be filled with a true sense of wholesomeness, warmth, healing, contentment and purpose. Shabbat Shalom! Chodesh Tov! Chanuka Sameach!

A busy Chanukah week alongside our fun Shule Chanukah functions. I joined some of my colleagues from the Rabbinical Council of Victoria for a visit to the Premier and Leaders of the opposition. We expressed our gratitude for their friendship and support, and prayed for their wellbeing and for the wellbeing of all Victorians. I also spread some Chanukah cheer with members of our local police stations. I thanked them for keeping us all safe throughout the year and noted how ‘Be a force for good’ is the VicPol slogan and that is essentially what Chanukah is all about. The donuts kindly sponsored by the Rabbinical Council of Victoria were a hit!

This week's PARSHA is Mikeitz (Genesis 41:1–44:17) Joseph’s imprisonment finally ends when Pharaoh dreams of seven fat cows that are swallowed up by seven lean cows, and of seven fat ears of grain swallowed by seven lean ears. Joseph interprets the dreams to mean that seven years of plenty will be followed by seven years of hunger, and advises Pharaoh to store grain during the plentiful years. Pharaoh appoints Joseph governor of Egypt. Joseph marries Asenath, daughter of Potiphar, and they have two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Famine spreads throughout the region, and food can be obtained only in Egypt. Ten of Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt to purchase grain; the youngest, Benjamin, stays home, for Jacob fears for his safety. Joseph recognizes his brothers, but they do not recognize him; he accuses them of being spies, insists that they bring Benjamin to prove that they are who they say they are, and imprisons Simeon as a hostage. Later, they discover that the money they paid for their provisions has been mysteriously returned to them. Jacob agrees to send Benjamin only after Judah assumes personal and eternal responsibility for him. This time Joseph receives them kindly, releases Simeon, and invites them to an eventful dinner at his home. But then he plants his silver goblet, purportedly imbued with magic powers, in Benjamin’s sack. When the brothers set out for home the next morning, they are pursued, searched, and arrested when the goblet is discovered. Joseph offers to set them free and retain only Benjamin as his slave. There is sometime confusion how to light the menorah. To clarify, we set up the menorah candles from right to left and we light from left to right, ie the new candle first.
