It's a sunny and warm start to Autumn here in Victoria, but I can't help feeling dark clouds overhead, the heaviness that's weighing on our hearts, as horrific images and news continues to emerge from Ukraine, and closer to home the devastating floods in Queensland and NSW.
I join you in hope and prayer for better days ahead, for those affected and for us all. For the last 3 weeks we've been reading Torah portions that detail the first fundraising campaign and the construction of the magnificent Tabernacle in the desert. The Jewish people were called upon to give and to give from the heart, because this Tabernacle was to be a place that united the community, a physical location that facilitated personal growth, and a place from which emanated light, peace and the blessings of Gd. Tzedakah, charity, generosity of all kinds has always been a fundamental element of Judaism. It's in our DNA. People have asked me throughout the week how and to who they can contribute, to alleviate some of the pain in the current crises. Here are some reliable options (I'm sure there are more) through which you can donate and make a difference to those suffering:
The Chai Foundation Australia JDC (The Joint) Australia Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine The QLD NSW Floods May our uniting with those around us in hope, prayer and support, bring about blessings of calm and peace and an end to all suffering. As we will recite in unison tomorrow in Shule, when concluding the second book of the Torah, 'Chazak, Chazak, v'Nitchazek!' Be strong, Be strong, and we will be strengthened! Shabbat Shalom, Chodesh Tov and a healthy week ahead!

This week's PARSHA is Pekudei (Exodus 38:21 - 40:38) An accounting is made of the gold, silver and copper donated by the people for the making of the Mishkan. Betzalel, Aholiav and their assistants make the eight priestly garments—the apron, breastplate, cloak, crown, hat, tunic, sash and breeches—according to the specifications communicated to Moses in the Parshah of Tetzaveh. The Mishkan is completed and all its components are brought to Moses, who erects it and anoints it with the holy anointing oil, and initiates Aaron and his four sons into the priesthood. A cloud appears over the Mishkan, signifying the Divine Presence that has come to dwell within it. © Copyright, all rights reserved, Chabad.org. |
