A masked Shabbat Shalom from the Rabbi and President! A new week. A new normal. I hope you're coping well with wearing your mask. Fogged glasses, shvitzing, lack of fresh air, beard complications, muffled communication... It's not easy. But sacrificing our personal comfort because we care about one another, knowing that it's making even a slight difference in the spread of this virus, makes it a little easier. (There are of course exemptions for those who can't wear a mask. Useful mask info on the DHHS website here) And keep smiling, because smiling with your eyes is a thing! It's called a Duchenne smile - Check out this interesting article. On the Shule front, I've been in touch with over 100 of our members in the past couple of weeks and while everyone is obviously frustrated with the situation, I'm happy to report that most are coping well and are in good spirits. Unfortunately some are not coping too well, which is totally understandable given the challenges this virus has presented - financial strain, loneliness, relationship issues, mental health struggles and the like. If you or anyone you know are struggling please see this list of excellent resources and support services available and as always, I am available anytime on 0433 676 300. Ronny can also be reached on 0413 863 263.
We have partnered with CCare and Kosher Meals on Wheels to assist anyone in our community who can benefit from their services. CCare provides (delivered to your door) freshly cooked dinner once a week, weekly groceries (fruit and veg), challah for shabbat and monthly pantry essentials, at not cost. A confidential self-referral can be easily made here: www.ccare.org.au/how-to-receive-help. In the final question of the ‘Self Referral’ form please kindly add a note saying that you came through Elwood Shule. If you’d rather we make the referral for you please be in touch with Ronny or myself. Kosher Meals on Wheels (www.koshermealsonwheels.org.au) provides and delivers frozen (heat & eat) meals. The meals do cost, but discounts are available through Elwood Shule. Please contact Ronny for more information. Our VirtShule online engagement continues to be very well received. We have a few unique events coming up, please scroll down for details. This Thursday is Tisha B'Av, the saddest of days and a fast day. Many tragic events throughout our history took place during this period, click here to learn more. May these difficult and somber days soon be transformed to light and joyous ones. Stay safe! Stay positive! Stay productive! Wishing you and yours a Shabbat Shalom! |

Tisha B'Av evening Film Screening - This Wed, 29 July, 7:15pm Join us virtually on Zoom, www.elwoodshule.org/zoom. 7:15pm A synopsis of Eicha – Lamentations, traditionally read on Tisha B’av eve. 7:30 Film Screening – The Light of Fire. A film about heartbreaking loss and inspiring resilience, The Light of Fire, tells a story about family, faith and courage. The Light of Fire tells the story of the American-Israeli artist, Yoram Raanan, who begins painting again after losing forty years of work in a sudden fire. Even as the flames still licked his studio, Yoram insisted that he would not be weighed down by his loss, rather he would rebuild with renewed vigor and come out of this stronger. Painting by painting, Yoram pushed ahead with his vision, despite the many who doubted him. We have chosen to screen this film on Tisha B’Av. It is after all the most tragic day of loss on the Jewish calendar. It is the day both Holy Temples fell, and when many other tragedies happened to the Jewish people throughout history. Yet, Tisha B'Av is also a day of birth and hope. For the greatest light is born amid the greatest darkness. |

Surviving a plane crash and beating cancer - Next Mon, 3 Aug, 12:30pm Elwood Shule and Young Jewish Professionals - Melbourne invite you to join us for this inspiring guest presentation. Thriving in turbulent times... A phrase that seems relevant in this moment of global pandemic craziness, however, these words literally define how our upcoming guest presenter Adir Freilich truly has beaten all odds and survived the unthinkable! Adir has an incredible story; he was on US Airways flight 1549 when it crashed into the Hudson River on January 15 2009. Further in 2018, Adir was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Adir will be joining us via zoom (here) from NYC to share his story of RESILIENCE, COURAGE, and POSITIVITY. Lock in the time, date and Zoom details and don't miss out on what will unquestionably be an uplifting and inspiring lunchtime presentation! |
