Hope you've had a good week! Our beautiful Shule has been enjoying some TLC (tender loving care) over the last few weeks (see above image), sure it's missing its heart and soul - US! But while things are quiet, it is going through some uninterrupted COVID renovations - knowing that we'll be back soon! Truth is, we all need a bit of extra TLC these days. Perhaps by lowering expectations, taking time to look after ourselves, being more patient, forgiving and kind to ourselves and to others or doing a reno of some sort, by finding ways to improve ourselves. And it's the perfect time! Today we begin the month of Elul, marking the onset of the High Holiday season.
These 4 weeks leading up to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a most opportune time for introspection and reflection. A time to review one’s attitudes and actions, a time to come closer to G-d and each other through prayer, charity and increased respect and love for one another. We listen to the call of the Shofar daily (besides for Shabbat), I'll be blowing the Shofar before our Zoom Mincha every day - you're welcome to join (link below). It's hard to believe how different the High Holydays will be this year - praying and singing from home... We as a Shule will do our very best over the next few weeks to assist in the preparation and feeling in the lead up to Yom Tov. As per my WhatsApp video this week, I encourage you in the next few days to please send me a few second clip of you and your family saying 'Shana Tova Umetuka' or 'Shana Tova' etc. If you have a Shofar, you can give it a blow as well! I'll be collating the videos into one video and will share with our community so we can wish each other a Shana Tova! Please record with your phone in landscape (horizontal) and send to me, 0433 676 300. Thanks to those who have already sent one in! May we all be inscribed and sealed for a healthy, good and sweet New Year. Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov! ...and as always, stay safe, stay positive, stay active and productive. |

Yizkor Booklet - It is a long-standing tradition to recite a memorial prayer in honour of a deceased relative or friend during Yizkor on Yom Kippur (Mon, 28 Sept) and to pledge charity in their memory. Sadly, it seems that we will not be gathering in Shule over the High Holydays, Yizkor will therefore be recited at home. Prior to Yom Kippur we will be sending out a hard copy and a digital copy of the Yizkor booklet with the names of those being remembered. If you would like a departed loved one’s name included in the booklet, please fill out and submit the online form here by this Wed, 26 Aug, so we can get the booklets out in a timely fashion. In the lead up to and during the High Holyday period we will engage with our community in various ways to the best of our ability. Details to follow. |

What an inspiration! Great to see Elwood Shule member George Oshlack in this week's AJN! "Every morning I'm down there in the basement at 8am, and I practice squash shots for about an hour... These days I would love to play a match against someone my age, but that's probably not possible... I feel I would win though!"
George, 94 years old, has won multiple World Masters Squash Championships, a Victorian championship, many Maccabiah medals and was named Maccabi Vic Senior Sportsperson of the Year several times! Go George! |
