Hope you've had a good week! As the year draws to a close, I spent a good few hours reflecting on 2020 at the Shule and put together a 7 minute video journey through the ups and downs of the past 12 months. While there was lots of uncertainty, one thing remained for certain - We stuck together and did our very best. We remained relevant and proactive and we kept our community connected, supported and inspired. I am so proud of our Shule community and truly hope we all get to experience a healthy, peaceful and enjoyable 2021! Please enjoy the video here. Shabbat Shalom! -- Today is the 10th of Tevet and we observe it as a day of fasting and introspection. The fast ends at 9:16pm. On the 10th day of the Jewish month of Tevet, in the year 3336 (425 BCE), the armies of the Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem. 30 months later, on 9 Tammuz, the city walls were breached, and on 9 Av of that year the Holy Temple was destroyed. May we soon see a rebuilt and peaceful Jerusalem! |

Tuvia Lipson ob'm. Pictured here at the consecration of the Lodz memorial installation he commissioned, Springvale 2014. There aren’t many people in Melbourne, in the Jewish Community and beyond who haven’t heard of Tuvia. An incredible human being. A pillar of strength, a beacon of light and a symbol of hope, courage and perseverance. A precious survivor, having lived through the hell of the Shoah as a young teenager. Tuvia was an integral part of the story and fabric of our Shule and would often regale us with one incredible story of survival after another. “I must live, I must survive, and I must tell the world what happened” he would say. He survived, he lived and he never stopped telling the world what happened. Through Courage to Care and the Holocaust Centre, Tuvia educated thousands, particularly young kids from all over Victoria, about the horrors of the Holocaust and the importance of tolerance and acceptance. He was a great ambassador for Am Yisrael, fighting for Eretz Yisrael in battle and advocating for love, care, respect and hope. An exceptional individual who impacted the lives of so many. May his memory be for a blessing. We wish Jack & Glynis and Garry & Edna and the grandchildren blessings of long life, good health and comforting memories. |

Congratulations and Kol Hakavod to Elwood Member Zak Gelfand! This week Zak completed a 2 day 80km walk ‘Bambra to Blairgowrie’ to raise awareness for and support Kids Under Cover - A not for profit which focuses on preventing youth homelessness and helps ease the financial costs associated with education and job training.
Affixing a new Mezuzah and putting on Tefillin were an essential part of his prep and fueling! You can still support Zak's fundraising effort here ($13k+ so far!). |

This week's PARSHA is Vayigash (Genesis 44:18-47:27). In the eleventh section of the Book of Genesis, we reach the dramatic climax of the chronicle of Joseph. It begins as Judah approaches (Vayigash, “and he approached” in Hebrew) Joseph in defense of Benjamin. Judah’s willingness to save Benjamin convinces Joseph that the brothers have repented and risen above their previous jealousy, so he ends the masquerade and reveals his true identity to them. Joseph then immediately sends all the brothers to bring their father Jacob to Egypt, where the family will settle in order to live through the famine. Ironically, the famine ends as soon as Jacob arrives, but the family stays in Egypt in fulfillment of G‑d’s plan as originally promised to Abraham. Click here to explore the Parsha. |

A couple are lying in bed and the neighbours' dog is barking like mad in the garden. The man curses under his breath and storms off. He comes back upstairs 5 minutes later and his wife asks "What did you do?" The man replies "I've put the dog in OUR garden. Let's see how they like it!" |
