I hope you had a good week! How often have you said or heard someone say 'let me chew it over' or 'that news was hard to swallow' or 'let's bring that conversation up again next week'... Interestingly, if you google the word ruminate, the top two results are 1. Think deeply about something and 2. Chew the cud, with a reference to goats. I raise this, not so much because we're getting into Shmurah Matzah season... but our Parsha this week teaches that chewing the cud (along with split hooves) is a defining characteristic of a Kosher animal. Given the shared terminology to describe both an animal and human behaviour, perhaps there's a life lesson here. A defining characteristic of a "Kosher" human being, a mensche, is someone who makes healthy decisions by chewing things over and thinking deeply before speaking and acting. Recognising that every word, action, reaction, social media post or email, will always have a flow on effect and a potential hurtful or negative outcome. To be Kosher is to ruminate. To be measured, calculated and thoughtful, particularly when we're in an emotional, heated or upset state. Pause, breath and think... Or you may just end up putting your split hoof in your mouth or worse. We have a sign up in our kitchen that says 'THINK before you speak': Is it True? Is it Helpful? Is it Inspiring? Is it Necessary? Is it Kind?
Shabbat Shalom and a healthy week ahead!

This week's PARSHA is Shemini - Parah (Leviticus 9:1–11:47) On the eighth day, following the seven days of their inauguration, Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the altar, and the divine presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary. Aaron’s two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a “strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not” and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right. G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts). Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to “differentiate between the impure and the pure.” © Copyright, all rights reserved, Chabad.org. |

Thanks everyone for your concern. First off, I'm OK, I was a bit shaken up though. For those of you that aren’t aware, I was robbed at the Caltex earlier this morning. After my hands stopped trembling, I managed to call the police. They were quick to respond and calmed me down because my blood pressure went through the roof! My money is gone however. The police asked me if I knew who did it and I told them, “Yes, it was pump number 2.”
